How to Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth without Feeling Guilty


You know you’re drawn to it like a bee to a flower, and you also know you must try your best to resist. When you feel your sweet tooth and your conscience wrestle each other, it’s a tug of war you cannot ignore, because one is sure to become a casualty in the battle. But, if you think there’s no way to satisfy your cravings without breaking your diet and giving in to gluttony, think again, because you do have options to please your sweet tooth and not feel guilty. All you have to do is:

  • Share your dessert: Yes, gluttony is a sin, and so is greed. So go ahead and buy dessert by all means, but then, share it if you want to minimize both the calories and the guilt and maximize the pleasure. When two or even three of you eat one helping of dessert, you satisfy your sweet tooth without feeling like you’ve deprived yourself of a treat.
  • Take small helpings: If you’ve made dessert at home or are at a friend’s or family member’s place for dinner, don’t skip the dish altogether, especially if it’s a favorite. Instead, eat a small helping so that you get to enjoy yourself and limit your calorie intake.
  • Sugar substitutes: If diabetes is what you’re worried about, try desserts made with sugar substitutes that have been certified by the FDA as harmless. Go easy on these products though because aspartame, the most common substitute for sugar, has been known to cause forgetfulness and other side effects.
  • Choose dark chocolate: Chocolate is good for you, if eaten in the right amounts. If you like this sweet treat, try dark chocolate to satisfy your craving for something sweet. It’s not just a dessert; it also has health benefits for your heart.
  • Eat more of fruit: Fruit is good; and it’s also sweet. So fill your stomach with this offering from nature. Or if you want a different taste, try flavored yoghurt for an after-meal dessert.
  • Fill your stomach first: If you are in danger of over-eating dessert, eat your fill of the main course, thus leaving yourself very little room to indulge your sweet tooth.
  • Treat yourself occasionally: If you’re on a diet, it’s not wise to starve yourself or deny yourself of any dish that you consider “unhealthy” because it’s loaded with sugar and fat. Instead, treat yourself occasionally to your favorite dish so that your cravings don’t get out of hand.

So you see, it’s really not that hard to have your cake and eat it too!
