Jolie has also been known to dine on protein-rich crickets, cockroaches and larvae when visiting insect-loving countries such as Cambodia, India, Thailand, and her daughter Zahara’s Ethiopian homeland. Scarlett Johansson, on the other sticks to happy meals or Burger King kids’ meals, while Playboy billionaire Hugh Hefner only eats meals prepared by his personal chef.
While dating the original cast of the Girls Next Door, Holly Madison, Bridget Marquardt and Kendra Wilkinson, Hefner treated the girls to dinner once a week and always allowed them to pick the restaurant. However, regardless of where they went, “They pick from the menu, but I have lamb chops and a baked potato sent in from the mansion, so [my meal] is set,” explained Hefner in 2007 interview.
Though he may be a billionaire now, Hefner’s parents were dairy farmers and he grew on Midwestern favorites such as corn-on-the-cob, potatoes and gravy, fried chicken and country-fried steak. Additional favorites of the Playboy founder include burgers and fries, and oatmeal cookies, also prepared by his personal chef. According to the mansion Sous Chef, Daniel Vanden Berge, the secret to Hef’s cookies is the amount of butter used in the recipe; extra butter yields a flatter, crispier cookie.
Hugh Hefner is hardly the only celebrity with finicky eating habits. The Material Girl also employs a personal chef, and sticks strictly to a macrobiotic diet of 50 percent whole grains. The term macrobiotics means “great life,” as coined by Greek philosopher, Hippocrates, in the 4th century BC. The macrobiotic diet was developed in the 1920s by Japanese philosopher, George Ohsawa, and consists primarily of whole grains, fruits and vegetables and lean proteins. Gwyneth Paltrow of the Iron Man franchise also follows a macrobiotic diet.
Gwyneth’s co-star in Iron Man 2, 25-year old Scarlett Johansson, reportedly prefers kids’ meals at fast food restaurants because she “like[s] the toy that comes with it,” according to The Inquisitor Online. Johansson also enjoys pizza “with anything but pineapple or anchovies on the top,” and creating healthy baked goods, such as cookies with coconut oil and egg whites.
Still, Johansson isn’t above a bit of splurging now and then. In a 2006 interview with Australian Women’s Health and Fitness Magazine, she admitted to getting “really fat” whenever she goes to Denmark because she enjoys Danish food so much, and in a 2007 interview with Parade Magazine, she reportedly ordered coffee cake and then complained that there wasn’t enough butter in it. Apparently butter is still a popular indulgence of the rich and famous?
Actress Ashley Judd, on the other hand, owes her svelte physique and youthful glow to a dairy-free diet and daily meditation, according US Magazine’s 40 and Fabulous issue. In addition to no milk, a dairy-free diet means no cheese, butter, cream or yogurt. Judd substitutes cow’s milk with soy milk, and avoids cream by starting her day with hot water and lemon, as opposed to coffee.
Jessica Biel, star of Blade Trinity and Valentine’s Day, takes it one step further by avoiding sugar as well as dairy. Biel does not, however, omit anything altogether, but assumes an “everything in moderation” approach to food. “I love my food. I stuff my face all time!” said Biel in a 2007 Celebrities post. Biel went on to say that she finds muscles “beautiful,” and that she would like to be a role model for young girls, and show that “you don’t have to be stick skinny to be gorgeous.”
For breakfast, Jessica enjoys oatmeal with diced apples, whole-wheat toast with sardines and tomato sauce, or an egg white omelet with tomatoes and grapefruit juice. Lunch is typically lean meat with a small portion of whole-wheat pasta and chopped vegetables, salad greens with tuna and a baked potato, or a mixed-bean salad with carrots and celery. Similarly, supper consists of salmon or lean pork with steamed vegetables, mashed sweet potatoes or brown rice. For snacks, Jessica prefers almonds to potato chips, and fresh fruit to frozen yogurt or ice cream.
Speaking of fruit, Claudia Schiffer eats nothing but fruit before 12pm. Schiffer also avoids alcohol and curbs her cravings with herbal tea and tomato juice, as opposed to caffeine. Preferring not to diet, per-say, because “it messes with your metabolism,” this mother of two sticks with three square meals a day, rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
Jessica Alba, star of Dark Angel, Sin City and the Fantastic Four franchises, also avoids alcohol and reportedly consumes two to three liters of water per day. When filming for Sin City 2, Alba followed a South Beach style meal plan, to include unlimited fruits and vegetables, lean meats, eggs whites, low-fat cheeses and multi-grains. Breakfast on the set consisted of oatmeal with berries and three to four scrambled egg whites; lunch was a mixed green salad with chicken or fish, and dinner was typically sashimi, small red potatoes and steamed vegetables. For snacks, Alba enjoyed almonds and air-popped popcorn.
Though Jessica admitted to indulging in “soul-food” during her 2008 pregnancy, she was back in the gym and eating healthy within weeks of giving birth to daughter, Honor Marie.
It isn’t all about health, though. Some celebrity eating habits are simply bizarre.
In a recent interview with The Sun, Nicolas Cage revealed that he chooses what he eats according to the mating habits of the animals in question. “I think fish are very dignified with sex. So are birds. But pigs, not so much. So I don’t eat pig meat or things like that. I eat fish and fowl,” says 46-year old Cage. Bizarre, yes, but not so surprising coming from a man with a lizard-in-a-top-hat tattoo, and a son named after a superhero. No wonder The Sun called him “a bit bonkers.”
Cage’s eccentricities expand to his spending habits as well. Ranked 45 on the Forbes Top 100 in 2009, Cage reportedly owns over 50 cars—to include a ’68 Chevrolet Corvette with 500+ horsepower—and owes the IRS $6.3 million in unpaid taxes. Of his infamous car collection, Cage says, “Cars are art that I can drive. It’s a visceral experience, better than other artistic creations. I’m one with the car, more than just looking at a painting or sculpture. I can feel it. All my sensations become aroused in the car.”
Hmm. Aroused by a car and eating fish for their dignified mating habits? Does it get any weirder than that?
Yes, folks. Yes, it does.
While filming Tomb Raider in Cambodia, Lara Croft actress, Angelina Jolie, became enamored with the country, it’s people, and it’s food. “I’ve eaten cockroaches, bee larvae and crickets. You can get them with peanuts inside or with guts. I like them—they’re really meaty and high in protein.”
According to the American Indian Council, the official term for insect eating is Entomophagy. Of the 1,462 species of edible insects, the vast majority of them are highly nutritious and excellent sources of lean protein. A cricket of 100 grams, for example, contains 12.9 grams of protein, 5.1 grams of carbohydrates, 5.5 grams of fat, and only 121 calories. Crickets are also high in calcium, phosphorous and iron, and can be made into flour for chocolate chip cookies or covered in semisweet chocolate.
Making insect flour is relatively easy. Begin by cleaning your insects and spreading them on a lightly greased cookie sheet. Set your oven to 200 degrees and dry your insects for one to three hours, before blending them in a coffee grinder or food processor to the consistency of wheat germ. In addition to cookies, you can ad your insect flour to salads, soups, and your favorite bread recipes. This is an excellent way to take advantage of the nutritional benefits of insects, without simply munching a chocolate-covered cricket or peanut-filled cockroach.
While pregnant with twins, Vivienne and Knox, Angelina shied away from her insect-faves, indulging instead on McDonald’s burgers, KFC chicken, Hot Pockets, pizza and ice cream. After their birth, she reportedly went on a “master cleanse,” losing 21 lbs. in 21 days, by following a liquid diet of organic lemon juice, cayenne pepper and maple syrup, according to Stylelist Online.
Hugh Hefner and Nicolas Cage, eat your heart out. Imported lamb chops and funky fowl don’t hold a candle to crickets and syrup.
