What’s better than a chivito?..another chivito 😀 What am I talking about?
A “sandwich recipe” only found in my country Uruguay!
What isn’t? It isn’t a panini sandwich, or a ham sandwich, or a chicken sandwich – either a gourmet hamburger!
Are you a sandwich maker? Then it’ll be very easy to do it and relish it!
A little of History about the Chivito
Punta del Este (the most famous vacation-spot here and it’s the Ibiza of South America!) was the cradle of its birth. In this city a lot of people – especially young people – go to bed at sunset after dancing all night. How do they do it? Simple, they take a little nap till midnight/1 a.m. and then straight to the nightclubs!
Why the national sandwich of Uruguay is called “chivito”, which translation would be as “baby goat” or “little goat” but it’s made with beef meat?
Everything turned out for a blackout at one restaurant, deep in the night…a lady customer fell asking to eat goat meat (she had had the experience recently with this meat in other country, but it isn’t here)…the owner told her that he was going to make a special dish with what he had at that time.
He prepared a toasted sandwich with butter, a finite fillet mignon, ham and seasoned it with various ingredients available at that moment.
The lady was totally delighted and the “chivito” had born!

How to Prepare a Chivito Comun (Basic Chivito)
- Bread (you can choose a sandwich roll, hamburger-type or it’s up to you…experiment!)
- A thin steak, usually beef tenderloin
- Mozzarella cheese
Method of Preparation
- Cut the bread in halves and I like to give a little toast
- Add mayonnaise on both sides
- Grill your thin steak and sprinkle a pinch of salt
- Put the ham and mozzarella cheese on the steak, warm till cheese melt
- Make the tower, add sliced tomatoes and the lettuce
- Put the half bread on top
And the “toasted steak sandwich” called chivito has more options…
Chivito Canadiense (Canadian Chivito)
Nobody knows why Canadian yet! Hey Canadian people, if you’ve some idea you’re welcome 😉
It’s the standard Chivito, more these extra ingredients:
- Crispy bacon
- Sliced/halves hard boiled eggs
- Sliced onions
- Red peppers
- Sliced green olives
- Sliced palm hearts
You can add different sauces, ketchup, mustard as an hamburger recipe, hence play with them at your taste…be imaginative 🙂
Chivito al Plato (Chivito on a Dish)
The same of the Canadiense without the bread and served on a dish. You’d add French fries, carrots and green bean salads. In general there’s a mattress of veggies, potatoes or fried potatoes and at the top the meat with olives. Certainly the stack can vary depending of your wishes 🙂
The options are endless Veg chivito (take off the meat and you’ve a delicious vegetarian sandwich), chicken instead of beef and so on.
These Uruguayan chivitos are utterly customizable, no doubt…you’ll be overjoyed!
I couldn’t stop myself to put the fast food-steak sandwich from here, but my blog won’t be the typical recipe-blog (the recipes will be minimal) because I want this blog to be different. There’re magnificent blogs full of recipes already doing splendidly!
